7 January 2004, Wednesday 14:59 - Rebooting Fedora Core 1 after setting up a seperate /boot partition to start Gentoo. Gentoo has a lovely Framebuffer console :) I have to admit, I just love framebuffer consoles & this one is the best I have seen. 15:00 ASR - Yawning. 15:04 ASR - Yawning. 15:05 ASR - Yawning. 15:09 ASR - Decided we wanted ACPI after all. Gave up DHCP. Law of conservation of four-lettered acronyms. 15:13 ASR - Ascertain presence of ACPI. Mental note : Its A-C-P-I NOT Ack-Pee. 15:17 ASR - Calculating broadcast address to setup eth0. 15:40 - Decided on a Reiserfs partition & created /mnt/gentoo/boot 15:40 ASR - Shyam exhaled loudly. 15:45 - Started (& completed) Stage 1 tarball extraction. 16:00 - Extracting Portage tree dated Sept 11 2003. Yup its 9/11/2003. 16:19 ASR - Sony's CD1 copied. Shyam relies on technology too much. 16:23 to 16:30ish - Sony's CDs 2 & 3 copied. 16:35ish - emerge sync. 16:40 - Watching emerge sync & ifconfiging every other minute to see how much bandwidth is being blown up. Right now its at 8.7 MB. 16:51 - 16.7 MB gone & still syncing. 16:52 - sync done. 17.9 MB used up 16:53 - Started fixpackages. 17:07 - ASR leaves. 17:45 - fixpackages done. 17:51 - Editing /etc/make.conf & setting optimization & USE variables. 18:25 - Started scripts/bootstrap.sh, Final Step, Stage 1. According to the manual, this should take about 2 hours on a 1200MHz Athlon... lets see how much it takes on a P3 500. 18:41 - emerge does a RETR ncurses-5.3.tar.gz & I lose 2 MB in bandwidth. 19:00 - emerge does a RETR texinfo-4.6.tar.bz2... 1.3 MB down. 19:18 - ifconfig tells me a total of 21.8 MB have been used up. 19:30 - emerge does a RETR bison-1.875.tar.bz2.... 814 KB. 19:33 - emerge does a RETR glibc-2.3.3-branch-update-20031222.patch.bz, 1.8 MB. 19:45 to 20:00 - I was AFK. glibc compiling. 20:54 - ifconfig now tells me a total of 24.7 MB have been used. This is after a bit of browsing & BattleMastering ;) links rulez :)) 21:25 - 3 hours since Stage 1 install began. glibc still going on. 22:04 - Seems like glibc is almost done. 22:13 - Its installing info pages & locale data... 22:19 to 22:32 - ...en_IN.UTF-8 just got installed ;) & its installing tons of languages that I won't ever use.... Spanish, French, Finnish... wow & there's Hindi as well (hi_IN.UTF-8), Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malayalam ?? (ml_IN.UTF-8), Marathi ?? (mr_IN.UTF-8), I almost missed Kannada (kn_IN.UTF-8), Russian, Swedish & then of course Tamil (ta_IN.UTF-8), Telegu (te_IN.UTF-8), Urdu, Uzbek, Chinese, Tagalog amongst others. 22:34 - Install seems stuck at zu_ZA.ISO-8859-1. I have no clue what to do. 22:37 - Phew. Its continuing, now installing man pages & docs. 22:38 - glibc done :))) Man that took 3 hours & 5 minutes. Its now installing zlib. 22:40 - Oh boy... it just did a RETR protector-3.3.7.tar.gz (25 KB) & then a RETR gcc-3.3.2-branch-update-20031218.patch.tar.bz2 (242 KB). gcc is gonna take a while I bet.... 22:42 - Just saw a notice asking me NOT to press Crtl-C come what may :) Seems like fun. 22:44 SYSTEM - Building GCC. 22:54 - Saw a lot of data on Automata... NDFA & DFA states for the Pentium & Pentium_fpu. Neat. 23:02 - Browsing thru links is FUN :) No Graphics... but still fun. 23:09 - And there's no vi as of now in Gentoo. Just nano. vi's there on the Live CD though, so am accessing it from there to edit this file. 23:51 - ifconfig update : 25.9 MB. The next time I'm short on bandwidth, I know what to use :) 8 January 2004, Thursday 00:01 - Still building gcc... 00:31 - gcc, Java stuff. 01:08 - gcc, Still on Java. Listeners & the like... I *have* to start Stage 2 today, before I go to sleep... 01:22 - Java seems to be done, its creating TONS of object (.o) files now. 01:35 - gcc done. 01:38 - Started re-building glibc. Wonder how long this will take.... 02:25 - 8 hours since the Start of Stage 1, already overshooting my estimation by 3 hours....am off to doze. Alarm set for04:43 to do a status check. 04:46 - Re-building gcc. I don't know if that's normal. Next status check at 06:46. 06:45 - gcc, Java run 2. Note : All the re-builds have been with -O2 flags....back to doze. 07:15 - Still on Java, doing .java files. & as I wore this.... 07:16 SYSTEM - Installing GCC. 07:16 - About time you did that. 07:26 - Darn thing went to Configure GLIBC AGAIN. I think something's not right. 09:21 - Got outta bed. Its generating locales for the second time. 09:28 - glibc done, again. Its not starting on baselayout. Its installing utilities, sysvinit... 09:35 - Re-building ncurses... 09:48 - Stage 1 complete. Total time taken : 15 Hours, 23 Minutes. I really doubt an Athlon 1200 MHz can do this in 2 hours.... 09:57 - Starting emerge system. Stage 2 Begins... 10:00 - RETR html-2.3.3.tar.bz2, 1.2 MB 10:12 - RETR groff-1.18.1.tar.gz, 2.2 MB 10:15 - Stage 2 gives me a "base" system with a text login & things. After that we'd have to do nice things(emerge) to getX, Gnome & other things up.... 10:30ish - emerge stopped for lack of j2sdk 1.4.1 docs. Blaaaaah 10:30ish - Am off for brekkie. 10:47 - Off to ASRs place to get the 1.4.2 docs & fool the system... 11:04 - Back from ASRs place. Lets see if this works. 11:16 - DIAS seems to be down & emerge wants to connect badly. I'll have to wait till DIAS is back up...& its up. International Gateway problems. 11:41 - Workaround : Added a -doc to my USE flags in make.conf & emerge continues....& stops. 11:48 - After consulting ASR & doing a diff on two files (one with USE=doc & the other USE=-doc) we're now on our way after confirming that ONLY the Java docs will not be installed. (Good Riddance...or maybe not). 12:02 - ifconfig update : 32.8 MB 12:26 - perl's doing TONS of self-tests for the last few minutes. 12:35 - Now Installing perl's man pages. 12:45 - OpenSSL being installed. 13:00 - OpenSSL completed. 13:04 - Added a -java to my USE flags as emerge started getting j2sdk 1.4.1-01.(Phew!!!! 40 MB saved) 13:05 - RETR grep-2.5.1.tar.gz, 683 KB. 13:06 to 13:17 - AFK 13:28 - flex just installed, freetype going on, (7 of 63).... 13:32 to 14:31 - Off for Lunch. 14:31 - ifconfig update : 45.6 MB 14:53 - Its building something huge... I don't know what, Oh just confirmed that its X or xfree86. I remember Sony telling me that X takes 4 hours to compile. I may take a nap. 15:18 - 24 hours & 18 mins after start of Gentoo Install. 15:30 - 17:55 - Slept. 17:58 - Python just got done... Now I don't think I'll be using python... but it still got done & took away 8 MB thanks to RETR. Its somewhere on (23 of 68). 18:08 - Complilation stopped due to errors. I'm trying to solve the issue. 18:25 - 24 hours have passed since start of Stage 1. 18:28 - net-misc/iputils-021109 is throwing up tons of errors, Googling so far hasn't helped. ASR's phone engaged..grrrr 18:41 - Still engaged & I'm no closer to finding a solution either. iputils has the Network Monitoring tools including ping & ping6. The latest version has a -try attached to its filename, so am wondering if I should try a previous version. 40 packages left AFTER iputils. 18:46 - Seems something messed up big time in glibc/elsewhere. I really don't know. 18:52 - ifconfig update 56 MB. Still engaged. 18:54 - Got thru to ASR. He's coming over. 19:05 to 20:32 - Tried error solving. Seems Gentoo is Shelved for now. ifconfig update: 59.9 MB. Rebooting System shortly. 9 January 2004, Friday 13:00 - Back & did an emerge sync. The problem was with an ebuild script which was solved 8 January 2004, 0905 PST :) Man am I lucky :) iputils installed like a beauty after the sync & now continuing on Stage 2 13:20 - ifconfig update : 5.1 MB, total 65 MB 13:25 - coreutils just got done, now on debianutils (11 of 41) 13:27 - RETR diffutils-2.8.4.tar.gz, 828 KB 13:30 - RETR e2fsprogs-1.34.tar.gz, 3 MB Accccccccckkkkkkkkkkkk. 13:35 to 13:49 - AFK. 13:53 - RETR gawk-3.1.3.tar.gz, 2 MB. ifconfig update : 10.9 MB, total 70.8 MB 13:55 to 14:20 - Off for Lunch. 14:21 - Stage 2 is at (35 of 41) :) ifconfig update : 15.5 MB, total 75.4 MB 14:34 - Stage 2 completed :) Wooohooo. Off to do Stage 3 shortly. Total time taken (approx) 8 Hours 30 minutes. 14:50 - Stage 3 begins. 14:52 - Done with soft linking localtime. 15:05 - Done with writing /etc/fstab. 15:33 - Wondering how to get emerge to accept a 2.6 kernel.... the one I have apparently doesn't have the same md5sum, so emerge refuses to do anything with it. Worst case scenario : blow up 30 odd megs getting the latest kernel. I had an idea to modify the md5sum (ASR felt that was a BAD idea) & anyway can't find where the sums are stored, so that option's ruled out. 15:48 - Left with no other option, am getting the 2.6.0 sources. 33 MB will go down the drain for this. Dang, Dang & Double Dang. 16:02 - Will have to find out if md5sums can be bypassed in the future. Man.... 33 MB for a md5sum. 16:35 - RETR linux-2.6.0.tar.bz, 33.2 MB, done. ifconfig update : 49.7 MB, total 109.6 MB 16:37 - emerge seems stuck after the download....I'm waiting till 16:50 & on second thoughts am not. I just Ctrl-C'd & emerging now. 16:49 - Wooohoooo. I now have 2.6.1-rc3. 16:50 - RETR genkernel-3.0.1_beta3.tar.bz2, 3.2 MB. Aaaaarrrrgggghhhhhhh. My Bandwidth is "screwed". I still have emerge world left.... 17:02 - genkernel SUCKS. Note to Self : Always stick with tried & trusted methods. Doing the kernel compile the "usual" way now. 17:35 - Compiling 2.6.1-rc3. 17:46 - ifconfig update : 52.9 MB, total 112.8 MB 18:04 - Compile done. I don't know what option I left out, System is just 1800 odd KB. 18:15 - Stage 3 complete. Total time : 5 hours 25 minutes 18:54 - First boot into Gentoo. Need to fix a couple of things now. 22:59 - Basic system is up now. Need to config/emerge what I need now.
